Do I Need Tattoo Experience for Areola Training?
It's the question we're asked more than any other, often from someone who's been dreaming about this work for years but has never picked up a tattoo machine. They might be a nurse, a beauty therapist, an artist, a teacher, or someone who's been through breast cancer themselves or watched someone they love go through it.
The short answer: no, you don't need tattoo experience to learn 3D areola tattooing with Kin+Sugi.
If you've not had any tattoo machine experience, that's completely fine. We cater all the content to complete beginners, so you won't feel out of your depth or left behind.
Here's what that looks like in practice, and what will help you get the most out of your training.
What is 3D areola tattooing?
3D areola tattooing recreates the appearance of a nipple and areola using tattoo pigment. Through careful use of colour, highlight and shadow, a skilled artist can create the illusion of a natural, three-dimensional nipple, even on completely flat skin. It's commonly chosen after mastectomy, breast reconstruction or other breast surgery, and after gender-affirming top surgery.
For many clients it's the last step in a long journey. You can read how Melinda approaches this work with her own clients on her 3D areola tattooing page at Body Toowoomba.
Why beginners can learn it
A 3D areola tattoo is really two skills working together:
Tattooing: using a machine, needles and pigment safely and at the right depth.
Realism art: understanding shape, symmetry, light, shadow and colour so the result looks natural.
Neither is something you're expected to have mastered before you arrive. Our 4-day 3D Areola Tattoo Course ($12,000) teaches both from the ground up:
Fundamentals first. Tattoo machines, needle cartridges, hand techniques, skin, healing and infection control, before you go anywhere near real skin.
Drawing the areola. Melinda has been creating hyper-realistic drawings since 2008, and she'll teach you how to measure, map and draw a realistic 3D areola using your own reference booklet, callipers and coloured pencils.
Practice on synthetic skin. You'll practise the full process, including on 3D synthetic areola skins, until it feels familiar.
Supervised model work. You'll then tattoo real areola model(s), with Melinda and Shelby right beside you to guide you, and to step in if you need them.
Time to refine. We build in time to revisit anything you're unsure of before you leave.
Will I actually be ready afterwards?
It's a fair question, and a big investment deserves an honest answer. Here's what we do to make sure you're not left on your own:
Small classes, with a maximum of five students, so you get real one-on-one time.
A full 'Ready to Go' kit, including a Mast wireless tattoo machine, cartridges, inks, an areola reference booklet, measuring tools, consent and aftercare templates, and a student manual with our supplier list and a price guide.
Photos and videos of you at work during the course, to start your portfolio.
12 months of support in a WhatsApp group with Melinda, Shelby and your classmates.
A shadow day at Melinda's or Shelby's studio if you'd like a refresher.
What you won't get from us is a promise that you'll be an expert in four days. Nobody is. You'll leave with solid foundations, real experience on models, and people to call when you need them. Your skill keeps growing with every client.
A note on certificates and infection control
You'll receive a Kin+Sugi Certificate of Completion. We're not a Registered Training Organisation, so this isn't a nationally accredited qualification. You'll also need a formal infection control certificate (commonly HLTINF005), which is completed separately, often online. Licensing and premises rules vary by state and council, and we'll guide you on what applies where you live.
Where can I train?
In 2027 we're running the 3D Areola Tattoo Course on the Gold Coast and in Sydney, Cairns, Perth, Auckland (NZ) and Melbourne. Start with the 3D Areola Tattoo Course on the Gold Coast or in Melbourne, or meet your trainers.
Would you like to start with something smaller first? Many beginners begin with our Scar & Stretch Mark Camouflage course, a 3-day beginner path ($8,999), and add areola later.
Join the 2027 waitlist. Just tick "No" for tattoo machine experience, and we'll be in touch when dates open.
