For many people after breast surgery, a realistic areola is the final step in feeling like themselves again. Learning to create that result is deeply rewarding work, and you don't need to be a tattoo artist to start.

If you've been searching for a 3D areola tattoo course in Australia, this post walks you through what our 4-day course at Kin+Sugi Medical Tattoo Academy covers, who it suits, and how to secure a spot for 2027.

No machine experience? That's completely fine

This is the question we hear most, so let's start there. As Melinda puts it: "If you've not had any tattoo machine experience, that's completely fine. We cater all the content to complete beginners, so you won't feel out of your depth or left behind."

The course is designed to teach you everything from scratch. By the end, you'll have the tools, knowledge and skills to leave feeling supported and confident to offer this service.

What the 4 days teach

Our 4-day in-person training combines advanced cosmetic tattoo knowledge with traditional tattoo methods, and you also get our online 3D Realistic Areola Drawing Course free. Here's what it covers.

3D drawing and shading

Everything starts on paper. A realistic areola is an illusion of depth, created with light, shadow and subtle colour changes, so you'll build your 3D drawing skills before you pick up a machine.

Pigments and pigment mixing

No two clients are the same. You'll learn how to work with pigments and mix colours, so the areola you create looks natural on the person in front of you and suits their skin tone.

Machines, needles and tattoo skills

Next comes the machine. You'll learn how tattoo machines and needles work, and build the hands-on tattoo skills needed to bring your drawing onto skin. We take this step at a beginner's pace, so the machine feels comfortable in your hand before you move on.

Hands-on work with live models

The course includes hands-on experience with live models, under the guidance of your trainers. This is where everything comes together, and where your confidence really grows.

Small classes and a full kit to take home

We keep classes to a maximum of 5 students, so you get real one-on-one guidance from your trainers throughout the four days.

You'll also take home a full kit with everything you'll need. The kit includes:

  • A large Kin+Sugi Academy case and a Mast wireless tattoo machine

  • 40 needle cartridges and a set of inks

  • A student manual and an areola reference images booklet

  • Editable consent forms, aftercare information and a client aftercare bag

  • Drawing tools: a blank drawing booklet, 5 areola coloured pencils, a white pencil, skin marker, white string, callipers, a circle ruler and a straight ruler, an eraser and sharpener

  • Set-up essentials: gloves, face masks, ink cups, grip tape, Vaseline, alcohol wipes and an ink mixer

12 months of WhatsApp support

Learning doesn't stop when the course ends. You'll have 12 months of WhatsApp support afterwards, so you can ask questions and talk through your early clients while you build your skills.

Learn from Melinda and Shelby

The course is taught by Kin+Sugi's co-founders, Melinda Rose Kropp and Shelby Brooks. Both hold the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, so they're trained to teach as well as tattoo.

Melinda is a realism and medical tattoo artist in Toowoomba. She has a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and has been creating hyper-realistic drawings since 2008. Her realism background is what lets her create convincing 3D illusions on skin, including areolas. You can see her work at Body Toowoomba's 3D areola tattoo page.

Shelby is a cosmetic and medical tattoo artist who focuses on natural-looking areola tattooing. She has been cosmetic tattooing since 2013, and she spent 10 years working alongside surgeons, doctors and nurses before opening her studio, Restore, on the Gold Coast.
